    Hawaii Five-0: Seriously?!?!?!??!

    2013 - 02.05

I don’t know why I still watch this show, I guess I just secretly hope that it gets better… or maybe it’s that Hawaii is a pretty place and it’s nice to see in HD, or it could be about the Shrimp Truck owner and all his crazy schemes.

So you have an episode and you’re going to cast someone as a sniper, but who has prosthetic mechanical hands capable of crushing people’s throats.  So who do you cast in that role?  Peter Weller of course… you know Robocop… seriously?

    One thing we have learned…

    2013 - 01.06

After the move one of the things that we noticed was how much better our TV looked, and it’s definitely something we’ve appreciated while we’ve been sick.  There hasn’t been a lot of anything other than watching TV over the last week.

Back in the old place we had lots of windows and relatively normal blinds which do a crappy job of keeping the light out.  Coupled with having the TV on the fireplace mantel, giving a less optimal viewing angle and I don’t think we fully appreciated how good our TV looked until now.  Proper viewing height and a blackout shade make a huge difference to the viewing experience.

I think we always knew that we weren’t getting the most out of our viewing experience, but didn’t fully appreciate how much of a difference it can make.  So if your HDTV is somewhere with a less than optimal viewing angle, or where there’s too much uncontrolled light, try it somewhere else and see what a difference it can make.

    Nadia 3 – Kelley Armstrong

    2012 - 10.01

Got the quarterly Kelley Armstrong newsletter today, which is one of those things that I get infrequently enough that I make sure that I actually read it.

That and there tends to be cool little easter eggs in it.  This time around, it was the reference to the fact that there’s going to be a third book in the Nadia Strafford series and that it’s coming out next year.  Since I love the books in the series so far, I’m pretty excited to hear about that.  Especially since it wasn’t clear that there would be more books in the series (it’s been 4 years since the last book).

The other cool thing in the newsletter (even though I knew this already) was that she’s getting a TV series for fall 2013 on Space (13 episode order) called Bitten and based on her first book in the Otherworld series (although they probably won’t limit themselves to the first book).

Chef Michael’s Kitchen: Gluten Free Flour

    2012 - 09.12

Finally an actual cooking show, probably the best one since Good Eats!  There’s several great things about the show, first off is Michael Smith who’s just awesome.  The second is that the show is about teaching techniques or frameworks in which you can channel your creativity and be successful.  In essence taking most of the risk out of experimentation and a lot of the fear too.

In the second episode Cooking with allergies: Lasagna, Muffins & Cookies (which you can watch online) he does some gluten free stuff, but probably the most interesting thing is that he makes his own gluten free flour mix.

Anyway, it’s only two episodes in, but we’re already hooked on Chef Michael’s Kitchen.

    Shaw EXO vs. Telus Optik

    2012 - 07.09

Considering making the change either to Shaw EXO or Telus Optik, just wondering if anyone has any arguments for or against one or the other of them.  I haven’t gone and done any of the research on our options yet (beyond knowing that both are available to us).

So I guess the questions are:

    1. are you happy with what you’ve got? if not, why?
    2. if you had the choice to make over again would you make a different one? if so, why?
    3. did you get a great deal when you upgraded/switched?
    4. anything else you think is relevant?

“Waiting Sucks”, True Blood Season 5

    2012 - 06.06

Just a reminder that True Blood season 5 starts on June 10th, so you have very little time to catch up, order HBO or find a friend who will let you visit them every Sunday night for 12 weeks…

    We are currently accepting applications…

    Breaking Bad Marathon

    2012 - 06.02

AMC is starting a marathon of Breaking Bad on Jun 11th with the Pilot episode, and then will be running everything through to the end of the 4th season over the course of a couple of weeks, showing 2-4 episodes/night.

This will get you all caught up for the Season 5 (and final) season of 16 episodes which starts July 15th (although it’s divided into two 8 episode chunks with the second 8 episodes currently scheduled to air in summer 2013 – how that’s not “2 seasons” I don’t know).

    Awake

    2012 - 05.29

This is one of those shows which has been cancelled, we watched the last two episodes last week.  Although the final episode left some stuff open, it worked well as a concluding episode.

What I actually liked best about the show is although it was weird and had some sort of paranormal aspect to it, it was not essential that you understand that paranormal aspect.  Once the premise was introduced it was used effectively, but wasn’t really explored through the normal course of an episode (e.g. most characters in the show were completely unaware of any supernatural elements in the series).

Another interesting aspect is that the show creator answered some questions about where the show would have gone in a Season 2 and potentially beyond.  It’s also one of the few shows where I would be really curious to actually hear directors commentary…

    More Cancellations: A&E

    2012 - 05.23

I remember back when A&E used to be cool, or at least I used to think it was, with a selection of good old shows, biographies and comedy.  In recent years they’ve lost their way in my opinion, and only rarely have shows which are of any interest to me.

One of those shows that we watched was Breakout Kings, which has been cancelled after 2 years.  Which is too bad, as it was definitely one of the better shows they had.

Also cancelled: Dog the bounty hunter… not something I care about, but Karin would watch it occasionally.

On the bright side the third season of The Glades will be starting in a couple of weeks…
