    Christmas Card?

    2013 - 11.19

We haven’t in the past sent out Christmas cards.  We’re thinking about doing it this year.  Mostly because of Nadia.  So, are people actually interested in getting or exchanging Christmas cards or is that something that our generation doesn’t do?

If you’re interested in getting one, let us know and make sure we have your current address.

    Metric Ton of Ginger?

    2013 - 10.16

Not everyone may know that I’ve started a Disc Golf business (retail), but I have.  As part of that I’m learning about the world of import/export and international trade.  To go with the whole international trade thing I’ve been using the website alibaba.com

Just like Costco, you can find things which are pretty hilarious on the website.  For example:

    Fresh Ginger in Jinxiang China

US$ 600.00 / Metric Ton  (seems like it could be a good price… for people who like ginger), here’s the kicker though:

    Minimum Order: 24 Metric Tons!

That’s right, you too could own 24,000 KG of ginger for the low low price of US$14,400…

    Log Driver’s Waltz

    2013 - 05.15

Karin played this on her phone (just the audio) earlier tonight.  I was pleased to find the official version of it on YouTube as posted by the NFB (National Film Board).

    Hawaii Five-0: Seriously?!?!?!??!

    2013 - 02.05

I don’t know why I still watch this show, I guess I just secretly hope that it gets better… or maybe it’s that Hawaii is a pretty place and it’s nice to see in HD, or it could be about the Shrimp Truck owner and all his crazy schemes.

So you have an episode and you’re going to cast someone as a sniper, but who has prosthetic mechanical hands capable of crushing people’s throats.  So who do you cast in that role?  Peter Weller of course… you know Robocop… seriously?

Amusing Costco item of the week

    2012 - 11.14

It definitely used to be the case that Costco only sold huge quantities of things, but that really hasn’t been true for a lot of years now.  Sometimes you still need to buy more than you really want, but usually it’s not by an order of magnitude any more.

That’s what made this item amusing: Laurentide -40ºC Windshield Washer Fluid.  Okay, not that amusing yet.  It comes in 3.78L jugs, and you need to buy 208 of them!  So that’s 786.24 L in total, because who doesn’t leave there windshield wipers on continuously?

On the bright side it’s currently on sale for only $395.99 (which is $104 off the regular price of $499.99).

    I Sit Corrected

    2012 - 08.21

A little while back, I made a joke about the father’s of our generation not being on Facebook.  Well that was the 2012 of two months ago, since then everything has shifted.  Karin’s dad is now on Facebook, and we’re all a little frightened… more for him than for us though…

    Rejected Public Art Installations

    2012 - 07.22

Okay, so this hasn’t actually been rejected — as to my knowledge it hasn’t been suggested before — but you’ll get the idea.

Imagine if you will a giant wire frame sculpture of: a crow!

So I’m thinking that this wire frame has enough horizontal wires that when the crows come home to roost that they will fill up those wires and make it look like one giant crow instead of individual crows…

Now you can see why it would probably be rejected (and probably should).  But come on!  On some level you have to admit it’s at least a little bit cool…

    Deep Fried Mars Bar

    2012 - 07.08

Last night went a little different than I expected, after a stop at Greek Fest for baclava (sorry it’s over now, if you didn’t go) I managed to end up at The Rumpus Room*.

As part of that adventure a deep fried Mars bar was ordered… it however was forgotten until we were ready to leave at which point it appeared.  Just to be clear, I didn’t order it, but I did try it.  I’m going to say that I didn’t like this particular one, but I could imagine possibly enjoying a different implementation.

For me the problem was the batter, it was overpowering, but it wasn’t overpowering because it was a regular fish and chips beer batter or something.  Instead it appeared to be a specially crafted dessert batter, which in other circumstances might have been delicious.  In this case however, I felt that the cinnamon in the batter overpowered the taste of the Mars bar, which in my mind at least defeats the purpose of the dish.

Regardless it was an interesting night.  So have you tried the deep fried Mars bar before?  Did you like it?  Where’s the best place in Vancouver to have one?

    * Only way to keep the long story short is to pretend that there was a chapter break, and that no further explanation of the shananigans was required.

    Dad’s on Facebook?

    2012 - 06.21

Just kidding, of course dad isn’t on Facebook, that would just be weird.  According to my totally unscientific survey — which really consisted of me consulting with my gut — father’s of my generation (e.g. my father, not the father’s who are members of my generation but rather the fathers of the members of my generation) are one of the most under-represented groups on Facebook (at least of frequent computer users).

Does this jive with your experience?  Is your father on Facebook?
