    Flickr uploads

    2013 - 10.18

Not something that was on my To Do list while Karin and Nadia are in Edmonton, but it’s been happening anyway.  Catching up on some of the photos that I should have already uploaded to Flickr.  Karin’s much better at keeping Flickr up to date than I am.

Anyway, as a reminder when we upload photos that include Nadia we restrict them to people who are designated as Friends or Family on Flickr, which means you need to have a free Flickr account, and then get us to add you as a Friend or Family.  So if you’re interested in seeing any of those pictures, let us know.

And if your Flickr account doesn’t include your real name, send us an email letting us know it’s you.

    Visitors Welcome

    2013 - 02.07

We’ve been home for about 3 weeks now, and things are starting to return to normal, or the new normal.  The house is definitely still in a state of “moving in”, but sufficiently accommodating and polished for visitors to be reasonably comfortable.

So if you’d like to come over and visit us, or meet Nadia, just let us know!

Our schedule is reasonably open, but also reasonably fluid.  Just about all the time sometime is sleeping, so email is somewhat preferred over phone calls as a means of communication as it’s least likely to wake someone up.  At the same time it seems as though someone is awake just about all the time as well, as we’re tag teaming on the parenting duties so far.

    Baby Pictures

    2013 - 01.25

It probably surprises no one that we already have hundreds of pictures of Nadia.  You might have noticed their conspicuous absence on places like Facebook.  For now at least we’re keeping them off those types of sites, partly for her and our privacy but also because of their policies relating to the photos that you upload which we’re not entirely comfortable with.

So what that means is that we’re currently only uploading them to Flickr, and that we’re restricting the viewing of those photos to our friends and family.  So what does this mean for you, if you want to see some of the photos (and videos)?

    1. You need to create a free Flickr account (you can use a Yahoo account, a Google Account, or a Facebook account if you prefer)
    2. Add both Karin and I as contacts: dcowley and Random Synapses (by screen name, or you can do it by email address)
    3. We then need to classify you as being “Friends” or “Family” and then you’ll have access to the assorted galleries featuring Nadia

We realize that this is a bit of an inconvenience, but we figure that those of you who really want to see the pictures won’t mind jumping through the small hoop, so that we can maintain Nadia’s online privacy and security.

    Deep Fried Mars Bar

    2012 - 07.08

Last night went a little different than I expected, after a stop at Greek Fest for baclava (sorry it’s over now, if you didn’t go) I managed to end up at The Rumpus Room*.

As part of that adventure a deep fried Mars bar was ordered… it however was forgotten until we were ready to leave at which point it appeared.  Just to be clear, I didn’t order it, but I did try it.  I’m going to say that I didn’t like this particular one, but I could imagine possibly enjoying a different implementation.

For me the problem was the batter, it was overpowering, but it wasn’t overpowering because it was a regular fish and chips beer batter or something.  Instead it appeared to be a specially crafted dessert batter, which in other circumstances might have been delicious.  In this case however, I felt that the cinnamon in the batter overpowered the taste of the Mars bar, which in my mind at least defeats the purpose of the dish.

Regardless it was an interesting night.  So have you tried the deep fried Mars bar before?  Did you like it?  Where’s the best place in Vancouver to have one?

    * Only way to keep the long story short is to pretend that there was a chapter break, and that no further explanation of the shananigans was required.

    20 Years in a Row!

    2012 - 06.18

I’ve got a good friend who no longer lives in the area and I haven’t seen her in a while.  Today is her birthday, and if I’ve done the math correctly this is 20 years in a row that I’ve wished her happy birthday on her birthday.  Sometimes it’s the little things that matter.

Now in truth I could be wrong, it might be 21 years or maybe only 19… but we’ll go with the round number, because we all lie at least to ourselves about our ages.  Myself I always need to double and triple check the math whenever I try to remember how old I am, because the answer I get doesn’t match how old I seem to think I am.

    Labyrinth next Monday

    2012 - 03.12

So Labyrinth is playing at Colossus in Langley or Scotia Bank Theatre downtown next Monday at 7pm.  Who wants to go with us?

    Wireless Access

    2012 - 03.06

Last week we had a bit of an internet outage, called in to troubleshoot it, and just after they had me do the factory reset it came up that there was a network outage on there end.  Lucky me, I got to reconfigure our wireless network.

On the bright side I got to reconfigure our wireless network, so I changed a bunch of things.  So if you’ve got a wireless device that was previously paired with our wireless network, you’ll need to set it up again next time you’re over, just an FYI.

    Vancouver Reclaimed

    2012 - 03.03

This is a business owned by a friend of a friend, and thought we’d give it a shout out (do people still say that?).  Much of the work looks really cool, and the owner’s a nice guy.  We’re not currently in the market for new furniture, but doesn’t mean that we don’t want some of the pieces.  So go and take a look at Vancouver Reclaimed to see great pieces like:

    Beef Jerky Party?

    2012 - 02.27

A friend has recently posted a recipe for Beef Jerky, and it sounds like it could be delicious.  It could be a good addition to a games night…

    Never Buy Beef Jerky Again

I wanted to share this amazingly easy, healthy, and unbelievably delicious homemade beef jerky recipe I made the other day. MrsTemple found the recipe in magazine. Despite its suspiciously ‘health-conscious’ approach, the mag is surprisingly full of delicious recipes. I’d recommend it, as it is for food-lovers, not weight-losers. Spicy

Another possible meaty treat appropriate for a games night is “Pig Candy” which we saw on a Saturday morning cooking program Food for Thought:

    Pig Candy

As one of our friends famously said:

“Bacon is the Candy of meats!”

But with all this food, we might need to have a cooking night before we can have a games night… anyone want to help?

It even looks like the recipes could be glutton free (and otherwise avoid other allergies and aversions).

    Valentine’s Post-Game

    2012 - 02.16

Valentine’s Day was a little strange this year, I actually spent much of the evening chatting with a friend over hot chocolate at Starbucks.  I was gone for nearly two hours.  When I got back, the apartment was very very clean, laundry was put away, it was all pretty spectacular.

I think that while I was gone someone ordered a lot of pizza and became the ‘Za Lady, and a bunch of faeries cleaned the apartment… it’s a working hypothesis…

I’m pretty lucky to know someone who would enlist faeries just to do something nice for me ;-)
