    Castle and Dresden

    2012 - 12.09

We currently have the most recent books by Richard Castle and Jim Butcher out from the library.  We haven’t finished reading them yet, but let us know if you would like to read them before we return them to the library.  The books are:

    • Frozen Heat – Richard Castle
    • Cold Days – Jim Butcher

    Castle: both parts

    2012 - 02.20

We watched Castle today, both parts of the two parter.  I wouldn’t say that it was the best Castle episodes we’ve ever watched, but there were a lot of fun moments in both episodes.  In case you haven’t watched it, I’ll speak no more so as to avoid spoilers.  What I will say though is I don’t think we’ve seen a really disappointing episode of Castle.  There are lots of shows, some of which you’ve maybe watched for years (or not) which can have totally ridiculous or lame episodes (Bones: Sir Charmington; Hawaii Five-O: North Korea), don’t think we’ve seen one from Castle yet though.

Since we finished watching last weeks episode before this weeks episode had aired we went down to the gym for 20 minutes as well.  All in all, pretty good for a Monday.

    Heat Rises

    2011 - 10.30

The third and latest Castle tie-in novel.  I think of the three that the second one is the strongest so far.  The books are campy and a little fun, and entertaining at times.  They clearly aren’t intended to be “good”, which is perhaps a little at odds with the show itself.  The show is definitely good, and Castle is quirky, but I’ve never gotten the impression while watching the show that he wasn’t actually a good writer.  So I’d say that the books themselves are below the level of writing and quality that you would have expected from the character themselves, which tarnishes the fiction that we’re trying to maintain as the credit for the novel is ascribed to the fictional character, and not the ghost writer.

If you enjoy the show, you’ll probably enjoy the occasional reference to things from the series, but they don’t happen frequently enough to make it worth your effort.  Also in this particular book there seemed to be a bunch of jargon for no apparent reason (I don’t recall that from the previous books).

On the merit of the books, I can’t imagine that someone would actually read the books and decide based on the books that they needed to check out the TV show.  The books just aren’t that good (although again, it seems as though that’s on purpose, although I don’t know why they’d do that intentionally).

    Castle Abridged

    2011 - 10.04

Last week everything went fine, no problems, the whole episode was recorded.  This week the last 46 minutes.  In the short term, I think we’ll be watching live instead.  Longer term it’s time to seriously consider switching away from Shaw.

ABC and Shaw feel our WRATH!

    2011 - 09.19

Big night tonight, season 4 premiere of Castle.  Made sure we had the PVR setup to tape it.  Got home a little late, so we watched it together, seemed to start somewhat abruptly (just after a book signing?), but it wasn’t until a few commercial breaks later that I noticed that the timeline only went to 37 minutes.  Our concern was that we would miss the end.

We continued to watch it, and were a little confused as the case was solved, wondering where the episode would go next.  Roll credits.  Turns out that it wasn’t the last 23 minutes that we missed, but the first.

Ok, that was weird, but things happen sometimes.  That failure was on the ABC Timeshift channel, and it wasn’t 10pm on the west coast yet, so no big deal, we set it up to tape at 10pm as well (ok, 10:01pm as Castle starts late, although lets be honest who wouldn’t rather get an extra minute of Castle instead of something like Dancing with the Stars?!?!?!?!).  It happened AGAIN!  The PVR started to tape mid-episode.  What’s up with that?

Now we’re going to have to watch the first 23 minutes of the episode streaming online.  Not impressed.  Don’t know whose fault it was: ABC or Shaw, but don’t let it happen again or there will be consequences!

    Heat Rises

    2011 - 09.14

Just on a related note, Heat Rises comes out on Sept. 20th, 2011 (which is the day after Castle premiere’s for the season).  The Burnaby Public Library has 5 copies on order, and I am the fifth hold, so I guess I’ll be getting to read it as soon as it comes in.  Or probably more accurately, I’ll be getting to pick it up as soon as it comes in, and then I will get book-jacked by Karin as soon as she sees it, and then 2.5 seconds later* I’ll get to read it.

    * note: 2.5 seconds later represents the actual time it will take her to read the book.

What do YOU want to be?

    2011 - 09.14

A while back I made a joke about being Harry Dresden for Halloween, but I don’t really think I could pull it off.  At various times in the past I’ve also thought of being Richard Castle just so that I could wear a bulletproof vest that said “Writer”, although that doesn’t feel nearly as appropriate these days, even if Karin would probably make a better Alexis.  She’s still definitely the writer around here (even if for the last few weeks at least I could claim to be the blog poster).

Then again, given that there isn’t any trick or treating in the building (don’t think it’s a bylaw, just doesn’t seem to happen), and that we don’t have any party plans at present, maybe I don’t need a costume at all.  Karin on the other hand needs something that she can wear to school at least, if not additionally to a party.  Although, Karin would probably appreciate having the excuse to wear multiple costumes…

Why am I posting about this now?  Well because if you start figuring it out now, you still have time to pull together an awesome costume for Halloween.  If on the other hand you don’t start thinking about it for another six weeks, then you might just be out of luck.

So what do you want to be for Halloween?
